Do-it-Yourself: Home Remedies for Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease and is surprisingly common. It’s marked by red, swollen gums that may bleed when you brush or floss. While a professional dental cleaning is the most effective way to treat gingivitis, there are several home remedies you can try to reduce inflammation and improve gum health between visits to the dentist.

Saltwater Rinse

A saltwater rinse is one of the oldest and most effective remedies for soothing inflamed gums. Salt helps reduce swelling, draws out infection, and promotes healing.

How to use it: Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds and spit it out. Repeat 2 to 3 times a day.

Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse

Hydrogen peroxide can kill bacteria, reduce plaque, and help heal bleeding gums when used correctly.

How to use it: Mix equal parts of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide and water. Swish gently in your mouth for 30 seconds, then spit it out. Do not swallow. Use this rinse a few times a week, but not daily, as overuse can cause irritation.

Oil Pulling with Coconut Oil

Oil pulling is an ancient practice that involves swishing oil in the mouth to reduce bacteria and plaque.

How to use it: Place 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth and swish for 10 to 15 minutes. Spit it into a trash can (not the sink), rinse with water, and brush your teeth afterward. Coconut oil has natural antimicrobial properties that can help fight gingivitis-causing bacteria.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that make it a great natural remedy for gum irritation.

How to use it: Use pure aloe vera gel (without added sugars or alcohol) and apply it directly to your gums. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing. You can do this once or twice a day.

Turmeric Paste

Turmeric contains curcumin, which is known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.

How to use it: Mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric with water or coconut oil to make a paste. Apply it to your gums, let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Use it a few times a week to reduce swelling and bacteria.

Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene

No remedy will work if you don’t follow a solid oral care routine. Brush twice a day for two minutes, floss daily, and consider using an antibacterial mouthwash. Avoid smoking and limit sugary foods and drinks, which can worsen gum problems.

Home remedies can be effective in managing early-stage gingivitis, but they are not a replacement for professional dental care. If your symptoms persist for more than a week or worsen, make an appointment with your dentist. With the right combination of home care and professional guidance, you can manage gingivitis and enjoy healthier gums and a brighter smile.
